How comfortable is it over crappy roads, pot holes, ruts, etc?
I am looking for a daily beater here. I drive into the city of Atlanta down Dekalb Ave every day at 40mph for work and the terrible road quality is slowly destroying my soul (and Miata). The Miata, especially in its current state, is just too rough over these roads. Plus, I feel like I get a new squeak or loose part once a month.
The 2011+ WRX appears to be a good combination of fun and (possibly) comfort because of the rally heritage. I could be totally wrong, however. I am only looking at hatch/wagons because I have an injury-prone greyhound that sometimes needs emergency transport when my fiance's wagon is nowhere to be found.
Any other suggestions are also appreciated. I may just buy a 99 4runner for $5k and be done with it.

If you hate interior squeaks and rattles, a Subaru is not the car for you. The ride is pretty firm, but the car feels a bit more planted than a Miata. Still, it's not a smooth riding car by any means.
Always a compromise isn't it?

My friend owns one. I drive it in quite often. Our county has the worst roads in California. It's not bad. More comfortable and easier on the bumps than my Celica. It does have low clearance though. Which is a little difficult with the amount of street wide dips we have in my neighborhood.

I like the Outback XT/Legacy GT wagons as they seem a little more practical than a WRX. With a Subaru you're not going to get phenomenal mpg and if rattles and squeaks aren't your thing I definitely would look elsewhere. Source: Driven many family-owned Subarus.

ugg yeah. The compromise part is always the most annoying. If I am not going to buy a fun 2nd car, then I might as well just buy the 4Runner. That is the most practical solution, but I would rather have something more exciting to drive every day.

Even the base one is a little rough. I'd hate to live with a WRX every day, as much as I would like to.

I love my 4Runner, it isn't fast, but it is surprisingly nimble. And it's easy to have fun in. Mine is old, though.

It's funny, whenever I post around here that I own a Golf R I get "lol y u no wrx". It's because I've been in my brother's enough to know that I wouldn't want to drive one every day. They become rattle traps in no time. And that was the 2007 "hawkeye" WRX. I think the interior quality has taken a nosedive even since that model (which wasn't great to begin with)

What year? I am looking at the 1999-02 as it is a sweet spot in price, features, and safety equipment.

Mines a '95, but I haven't heard a bad thing about 99-02. I do believe you can get locking diffs and a manual on those.
